Depression: the inevitable and overwhelming emotion that almost every person will deal with in their lifetime, whether it be for a few hours, a day, weeks, months, or even years. The feeling of depression is almost indescribable. An adjective that I believe best describes the feeling of depression would be helpless. This despair makes us feel as if we will never get out of the sadness we are feeling, no matter what we do.


When we feel helpless, where do we turn? Who do we discuss it with? Do we become introverted and escape into our rooms, or do we exhibit extroverted behavior and reach out to our closest peers?

The first step in the process should be prayer. Pray with me:


Dear Heavenly Father, help me to feel your presence while I am vulnerable in my thoughts and emotions. Lead me to Your word and help me to feel loved by You. My depression makes me feel worthless, but I know that my true worth is in You - let that be a constant reminder in my mind. Let Your words flow through and resonate with me as I go throughout my toughest mental days.


The next step in this process should be searching scripture for passages to comfort you. Included are a few that have helped me in the past, and I believe will help you in the midst of depression. Resonate on these verses, not on the troubling thoughts in your mind.


Psalms 34:17 When the righteous cry for help, the LORD hears and delivers them out of all their troubles.


Psalms 3:3 But you, O LORD, are a shield about me, my glory, and the lifter of my head.


Psalms 42:11 Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you in turmoil within me? Hope in God; for I shall again praise him, my salvation and my God.


John 16:33 I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.


Deuteronomy 31:8  “The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.”



After this devotional time, if you’re still not feeling any better, I suggest discussing the issues you’re facing with a close friend or family member; someone you can relate to and trust with this information. Even if you’re unsure and feeling vulnerable about opening up, I highly suggest, as a person who has been battling with depression for eight years, talking to someone about it feels a lot better than bottling the emotions up inside. Depression can feel overwhelming, but there are steps to take to not let it overwhelm you.
